San Diego Museum of Art: explore, learn and enjoy
In 1926, the San Diego Museum of Art opened its doors as the official fine arts gallery of San Diego, quickly building an expansive collection of American, European, Asian, Latin and Contemporary art. In addition to the museums fine arts collection, visitors can also enjoy a variety of rotating exhibitions from local and international artists.
Today, SDMA is one of the regions oldest and largest art museums offering an extensive schedule of supporting cultural and educational programs. Museum art school is a great place for adults and children to learn various techniques and skills to foster creative expression. Family programs are offered on Saturdays and feature guest artists and writers that speak on a variety of art related topics. Visitors can enjoy activities, music, performances and can make their own art.
For a bite to eat while visiting SDMA, head over to the onsite café and enjoy gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads, drinks and dessert items. The café is a casual, family-friendly eatery located in the Sculpture Court of the museum. Café hours are Tuesday-Sunday, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Want to take a piece of the museum home with you? Be sure to visit the museum shop to pick up trinkets, books, posters, prints, shirts, gift certificates and much more.
Another great resource at SDMA is the museum library. Housed in a detached wing of the museum complex, this library offers a collection of 27,000 books, 12,000 volumes of periodicals and tons of photographs, scrapbooks, rare art periodicals, lithographs and videos. Use of the library is limited to museum members only. For more information on how to become a museum member and for a complete list of collections, exhibits and other events offered at SDMA visit the website. Guided tours are available to help patrons get the most out of their SDMA visit.
