Japanese Friendship Garden: Explore the tranquil harmony of a Japanese tradition
Located on 11 acres of serene land in San Diego, the Japanese Friendship Garden is an expression of friendship between San Diego and its sister city Yokohama. The Garden infuses together these two cultures to create a unique Japanese Garden experience complete with stone arrangement, Koi pond, exhibition hall and ornamental tree collection. Visitors to the Garden can take a tour of the grounds and explore a private collection of Japanese artifacts from around the world.
The Japanese Friendship Garden is named "San-Kei-En" meaning "Three Scene Garden". The three scenes include water, pastoral and mountain. The design of the San-Kei-En is guided by the original principles of the Japanese Garden, while incorporating the local regional landscape and climate. Through the arrangement of stones, water, plants and trees a balanced composition can be achieved for use in meditation, enrichment and inner peace.
While strolling through the Gardens, be sure to visit the Tea Pavilion. There you can enjoy a variety of teas as well as sushi, noodles, rice bowls, salads and other snacks, while taking in the beautiful harmony of the Garden grounds.
Looking for a visually stunning location for your special event? The Garden can accommodate weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and other events large and small. The Garden also serves as an educational resource to the community, providing a variety of seminars, classes and workshops as well as accredited horticultural classes. For current information on events, exhibits and classes visit the Garden website or Facebook page and follow on Twitter.
