Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum: A collection of Marine Corps aviation history
Apr 2, 2010
Since the 1940s, when the Marine Corps Aviation program first began in San Diego, the effort to preserve, document and display the historical artifacts that reflect the rich legacy of Marine aviation has been the sole mission of the Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation and Aviation Museum.
The Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum is recognized as the only museum worldwide that is dedicated to preserving the Marine Corps aviation memorabilia. Inside, the display of memorabilia and artifacts dates back to the earliest existence of the Marine Corps, including fine art, military clothing, weapons, trophies, awards and much more. You’ll find displays from WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. There is also an exhibit dedicated to recognizing the contributions of women in the Marine Corps.
The museum has an extensive outdoor exhibit showcasing more than 25 vintage aircraft. Some of the aircraft that you can see on display include several Skyhawks, Wildcats, Sea Cobras, Cougars, Retrievers and Crusaders. Aircraft restoration is a significant part of what they do at the museum. Led by volunteer flight crews, each plane is restored to its original condition. The museum gladly accepts donations and volunteer services to aid in the restoration efforts. Visit the website for more information on how to help.
If you have a love for aviation, the Marine Corps, or both, then this is a great museum to visit! Self-guided tours are open to the public, and group guided tours can be arranged with advance notification. While visiting the museum, be sure to stop by and browse around in the Museum Store. There are many novelty souvenirs to enjoy, including clothing, hats, books, models, patches, key chains and gifts.
