The La Jolla Open Aire Market: A Coastal Sunday That Gives Back

William Routt·Jul 2, 2026·5 min.

A local's guide to the La Jolla Open Aire Market — a coastal Sunday of produce, food, and artisans that funds the local school.

Overview

Of all the farmers markets I send people to, this is the one I'd call the most La Jolla — laid-back coastal charm, 140-some vendors, and a story that makes you feel good about every dollar you spend. The La Jolla Open Aire Market takes over the grounds of La Jolla Elementary every Sunday morning, and here's the kicker: every cent of the proceeds funds the public school it sits on. Great produce, gourmet food, live music, room for the kids to run — all while supporting local teachers and classrooms. It's a genuinely lovely way to spend a Sunday. Here's what to know.

Quick Facts

  • What: A certified farmers market with produce, international food, artisans, and live music — benefiting La Jolla Elementary
  • When: Every Sunday, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., rain or shine (closed Easter Sunday, and when Christmas falls on a Sunday)
  • Where: La Jolla Elementary School — Girard Avenue at Genter Street, La Jolla
  • Cost: Free to attend
  • My pro move: Go early — the best parking and the most popular goodies both go fast, and some vendors sell out

What Makes It Special

The backstory is the heart of it. The market started back in 1998 when a La Jolla Elementary parent dreamed up a way to fund a school library — it opened with 14 farmers and one artisan, and nearly three decades later it's grown into one of the biggest and best-loved markets in the county. Every dollar still goes back to the school, funding art, music, library, and technology programs, campus improvements, and even extra teachers to shrink class sizes. You're shopping and chipping in for local kids, which is a pretty great trade.

It's also one of the most family-friendly markets around, thanks to the setting. Because it's on a school campus, there's an expansive green field and a play structure, so kids have real room to roam while you browse. It's designed for lingering — grab lunch, spread out on the field, and catch the weekly live music.

What You'll Find

  • Certified local produce — small family farms from around San Diego County with seasonal fruit, veggies, and gorgeous (and affordable) fresh flowers
  • A gourmet food court — an international spread, from burritos and crepes to kebabs, dumplings, sliders, and kettle corn
  • Artisans and gifts — jewelry, handmade soaps, French linens, woodwork, art, and knick-knacks, with a selection that changes week to week
  • Succulents and plants — a longtime favorite tent, with plenty of small, carry-home options
  • Little extras — onsite massage and chiropractic, lawn games like Giant Jenga, and even complimentary dog-sitting

Three times a year, the market throws special editions — the Spring Fling, Harvest Festival, and Winter Carnival — with seasonal fun like face painting, a rock wall, egg hunts, and a visit with Santa.

Good to Know

  • Parking is a scramble — there's no dedicated lot, so aim to arrive early and park wherever you can near Girard and Genter
  • Restrooms are available inside the school building
  • Bring a card — most vendors prefer card or wireless payment, though many take cash too
  • It's walkable to the Village — pair it with La Jolla's shops, and you're minutes from the Cove and the coast
  • Come for lunch — the prepared-food court is good enough that plenty of locals come just to eat

It's the perfect bag of laid-back Sunday coastal vibes — and one that does some real good. For more around town, browse our full event calendar. And if a morning at the market has you dreaming about life in the Village, our La Jolla neighborhood guide is a great place to start.
