Pro pickleball's top league hits Barnes Tennis Center July 16–19 — four days of team competition in Point Loma.
The fastest-growing sport in America brings its top pros to town: Major League Pickleball (MLP) returns to San Diego for a four-day regular-season showdown, July 16–19, at the Barnes Tennis Center in Point Loma. It's the world's premier coed, team-based pro pickleball league — over 100 of the best players on the planet, organized into hometown franchise teams, battling across four match courts at once. Whether you're a diehard who plays every weekend or just curious what the buzz is about, this is a genuinely fun, high-energy day out.
MLP isn't your standard tournament — it's a team league, which is what makes it so watchable. Twenty franchise teams (Bay Area Breakers, California Black Bears, LA Mad Drops, SoCal Hard Eights, and more) compete for standings points, and every team matchup runs four games — women's doubles, men's doubles, and two mixed-doubles games — with a fast-paced singles "DreamBreaker" tiebreaker if it's all square. With matches firing on four courts at once, plus concessions, a bar, a DJ, and sponsor tents, the venue has more of a festival energy than a quiet country-club vibe.
There's real stakes here, too: this is Stop #7 of nine regular-season events, and teams are scrapping for points to lock up a spot in this season's playoffs. Fun local note — San Diego is so central to MLP that the playoffs also come to town in August, so this is your midsummer preview of the postseason picture.
If you've watched pickleball explode from a backyard pastime into the country's fastest-growing sport, this is the top of the pyramid. MLP, founded in 2021, has become the marquee stage for team pickleball, with star players, celebrity team owners, and a live-event experience built for fans. Catching it in person — close enough to hear the pop of the paddle and the on-court chatter — is a different thing entirely from watching on a screen.
It's one of the more exciting sporting events San Diego hosts this summer, and a fun one whether you're a player or a first-timer. For more around the county, browse our full event calendar.
