Selva Coffee House: Specialty Coffee Inside a Jungle-Like Nursery

Dorthy Routt Millsap·Jun 28, 2026·5 min.

A local's guide to Selva Coffee House — creative matcha and coffee inside a jungle-like plant nursery, in Midway and Del Mar.

Overview

I've been to a lot of San Diego coffee shops, but Selva is the only one where I've walked in for a latte and walked out genuinely tempted to buy a six-foot fiddle-leaf fig. That's the whole magic of the place: Selva Coffee House lives inside Terra Bella Nursery, so you're sipping a handcrafted matcha completely surrounded by towering tropical plants. "Selva" means jungle in Spanish, and the name fits — it's less a café and more a little green escape from the city. Here's why it's one of my favorite spots to send people.

Quick Facts

  • What: A specialty coffee house set inside a plant nursery — jungle vibes, creative drinks, and weekend DJ sets
  • Where: Two locations — the original inside Terra Bella Nursery in the Midway District (3535 Camino del Rio W, near Sports Arena/Rosecrans), and a newer spot inside Terra Bella Nursery in Del Mar
  • Hours (Midway): Daily from 6 a.m., until 9 p.m. most nights and 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays
  • Good to know: Wildly popular and very Instagram-famous, so expect a crowd and limited seating at peak times
  • My pro move: Go on a weekday morning to beat the lines, or lean into the weekend DJ-and-disco-ball scene if that's the vibe you want

What Makes It Special

The setting is the whole thing. Walking in, you're immediately under a canopy of greenery — it genuinely feels like stepping into a jungle, which is exactly why it's become such a magnet for the photo-and-coffee crowd. Terra Bella Nursery itself is a destination (it started on five acres in South San Diego back in 2007 and has since grown into one of California's biggest growers), so you can grab a drink, wander the plants, and walk out with a new monstera if the mood strikes.

It backs up the aesthetic with genuinely creative drinks, too. The matcha lineup is the headliner and the thing regulars rave about — the DejaVu (coconut), Pop Quiz (pistachio), Daydream (lavender), and Queenie (strawberry) are all crowd favorites, and oat, almond, and soy milks come with no upcharge. The espresso drinks get the same inventive treatment, and the big pastry case includes clearly labeled vegan options from Split Bakehouse alongside the regular lineup.

The Weekend Scene

Selva isn't just a quiet morning spot. On weekends it leans into a party energy — live DJ sets and what might be the best disco ball I've seen in a coffee shop — and the Midway location stays open late (until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday), which is rare for a café. It's a fun, social, only-in-San-Diego twist on the coffee-shop format.

Two Locations, Same Jungle

The original lives inside Terra Bella Nursery in the Midway District, just off the Sports Arena/Rosecrans corridor where the 5 and 8 freeways meet — easy to fold into a Point Loma or beach day. The newer Del Mar location brought Selva's tropical-noir look up the coast inside the Del Mar Terra Bella Nursery, so North County folks get their own jungle escape now too. Either way, the formula is the same: great drinks, surrounded by plants you can take home.

Good to Know

  • It gets busy — this is a genuinely popular, photogenic spot, so lines and wait times can be long at peak hours
  • Seating is limited and there aren't many outlets, so it's better for a drink-and-go or a casual hang than a long laptop work session
  • Parking is tricky at Midway — it's largely street parking (the lot is reserved for the nursery), and some spots are tow zones, so read the signs
  • There's a rewards program, and the staff are known for happily remaking a drink to your liking
  • Bring your plant-shopping willpower — you've been warned

It's one of the most distinctive coffee experiences in the city, and worth going out of your way for. Looking for more? Browse our other Local Picks and the full event calendar.
