ArtWalk San Diego: Four Free Festivals, 250 Artists, and Nothing Until April
Four free art festivals a year, 250 artists filling Little Italy, and a chance to buy original work straight from the person who made it. The next one is in April.
Overview
ArtWalk San Diego has been running fine art festivals here since 1984, and most people only know the big one.
There are four. They're spread across the year and across the county, they're free, and the organization's stated purpose is specific: "To create high quality venues for fine artists to showcase and sell their work, making the possibility of collecting original art accessible to everyone."
That last clause is the part worth paying attention to. These aren't exhibitions. They're markets — artists travel from across the US and Mexico to show and sell, and you're buying from the person who made the thing.
Here's the thing to know before you plan anything, and it's a scheduling fact rather than a hook.
The 2026 season is over. All of it. Bella Vita Fest finished on October 18, Carlsbad ran in September, Liberty Station in August. The next ArtWalk event of any kind is Mission Fed ArtWalk, April 24–25, 2027 — six months out.
So this is a calendar-marking piece, not a this-weekend piece. The good news is that the whole 2027 calendar is worth putting in your diary now, because three of the four are free and the fourth is mostly free.
The 2027 Calendar
Mission Fed ArtWalk — April 24 & 25, 2027 · Little Italy
- The 43rd annual, and the organization calls it "the largest and longest-running fine art festival in Southern California."
- More than 250 visual artists, filling the streets of Little Italy along India Street.
- About 100,000 attendees across the weekend.
- Four music stages.
- Hours: 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Sunday.
- Interactive art for families, and KidsWalk for younger children.
- The 2027 featured artists are chosen in February 2027.
ArtWalk Liberty Station — August 2027 · Point Loma
- Its 22nd year in 2027. Held at Ingram Plaza in the Arts District at Liberty Station.
- In 2026 it ran with more than 175 artists and a ticketed Friday-evening preview pARTy — live music, drinks, and kids 12 and under free — followed by two free public days.
- 2026 hours were 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Sunday, with the preview 5–8 p.m. Friday.
- Preview tickets go on sale in May 2027.
- The music programming runs in partnership with the San Diego Music Awards.
ArtWalk Carlsbad — September 2027 · Armada Drive
- Free to attend, on Armada Drive above the Flower Fields, overlooking the ocean. It debuted in 2018.
- In 2026: more than 150 fine artists, food trucks, live music and KidsWalk.
- 2026 hours were 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Sunday.
- Parking is just east of the venue on either side of Fleet Street, with signs directing you to the lots.
Galbani Bella Vita Fest — autumn 2027 · Little Italy
- A celebration of Italian culture with chalk art, wine, food and music. 2026 was the fourth annual.
- Free to the public, with separately ticketed wine tasting.
- Live chalk artists work on India Street, there's a Galbani cooking stage, Italian wines, and a kids' chalk area.
- 2026 hours were 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Sunday.
How to Actually Use One of These
- Bring a way to carry things home. These are selling shows. People routinely arrive without having thought about how they'd transport a framed piece back to the car.
- Go on Sunday if you want to talk to artists. Saturday is busier; Sunday opens an hour earlier and closes an hour earlier, and the pace is calmer.
- Talk to them. The entire premise is direct contact between artist and buyer. Asking about process is normal and welcome here in a way it isn't in a gallery.
- Bring kids. All of them run KidsWalk or an equivalent children's area — this is a rare arts event that's actively built for families.
- Little Italy is walkable, parking isn't. For the April event, the sensible move is transit or a rideshare rather than circling India Street with 100,000 other people.
If You're an Artist
All four festivals run open calls:
- Mission Fed ArtWalk applications go through ZAPPlication. The 2027 featured artists are chosen in February 2027, so applications close before then.
- Bella Vita Fest runs a separate call for chalk artists.
- Deadlines aren't published on the main site — check the application pages directly.
About the Organization
- Running fine art festivals in San Diego County since 1984 — four decades.
- Mission Fed ArtWalk is the flagship; Liberty Station was added in 2013 (formerly ArtWalk on the Bay), Carlsbad debuted in 2018, and Bella Vita Fest is the newest.
- Their stated vision: "to bring fine art out into the open, showcased in an accessible, fun festival format, encouraging attendees to support our creative community."
- Mission Fed Credit Union is the title sponsor of the flagship event; Galbani titles Bella Vita Fest.
