The short version
Residential mesas, with Mission Valley below.
Serra Mesa developed after World War II with a mix of housing and supporting retail. Its canyon systems run north to south toward Mission Valley, dividing the community into areas whose street connections are not always obvious from a map. The City's profile also identifies a substantial health and institutional district here.
Two public stops offer a useful introduction: Serra Mesa Recreation Center on Village Glen Drive and the Serra Mesa-Kearny Mesa Library on Aero Drive. The recreation center occupies two levels, with sports space and picnic areas below and the building on the upper level. The library adds patios and meeting spaces rather than another shopping destination.
For a housing search, distinguish a residential street from the larger roads that connect it with Mission Valley or the employment areas to the north. Try the actual trip you expect to repeat. The canyon setting can be an attractive feature, but a route down to the valley should be checked on the public street network rather than inferred from how close the destinations look.
