Overview
The Dipper Dash starts in the middle of Belmont Park, spills out onto the Mission Beach Boardwalk, and runs an out-and-back along the ocean before finishing back where it started. It's chip-timed, it's flat, and it's over early enough that the rest of your Sunday is still intact.
The name comes from the Giant Dipper, the wooden roller coaster that has stood at Belmont Park since 1925 — a National Landmark that survived the park's closure in 1976, a demolition threat, and a grassroots save-the-coaster campaign before a $2 million restoration brought it back in 1990. You run the race named after it, then you get to ride it. That's the whole idea, and it's a good one.

What You Actually Get for $54.95
Run the numbers on this one, because they're unusual. Entry includes a Ride & Play Wristband good for unlimited rides and attractions at Belmont Park on race day — a $64.95 value on its own. The wristband costs more than the race.
So if you were ever going to spend a Sunday at Belmont Park with your family, the 5K is effectively free, and you get a medal for it. That's the single best argument for signing up, and it reframes the whole event: this isn't really a race weekend expense, it's a park day with a run attached.
Also included: chip timing and a race bib, a custom finisher medal, a complimentary drink ticket, free event photography, early access to the park before it opens to the public, and entry to the after-party.
The Course
The course starts in the heart of Belmont Park and opens onto the Mission Beach Boardwalk, running up and down the oceanfront before returning. It is dead flat, which makes it a legitimately good place to chase a 5K personal best — there is no hill anywhere on it, and September mornings on the coast are cool and usually still.
The tradeoff is that the boardwalk is a shared, popular path. An 8 a.m. Sunday start gets ahead of most of the crowd, but expect some weaving, and be courteous with anyone out walking. Wide, forgiving, and scenic is the right expectation; empty is not.
Kids 10 and under run a quarter-mile loop, which is a real distance for small legs and short enough that it stays fun.
After the Race
The finish line rolls into the Fit Social after-party — local vendors, cold plunges, a raffle, live DJ sets, and oceanfront views, running through about noon. Then your wristband is live and the park is yours for the day.
The Animal Pad brings adoptable rescue dogs on site throughout the event, so there's a genuine reason to stick around past your drink ticket. A portion of proceeds supports their rescue, fostering, and adoption work, and the on-site dogs make that connection concrete rather than abstract.
Race Morning
Get there for the 6:30–7:45 a.m. check-in window. It closes 15 minutes before the gun, and packet pickup is on race morning only — there's no day-before option listed.
Take the free parking seriously. Free parking in Mission Beach on a September Sunday is close to a miracle. It's also finite. Arrive early enough to use the on-site lot, or head straight for the overflow lot at 1100 W Mission Bay Drive.
Dress for a coastal morning. Marine layer at 8 a.m., sun by 10. A throwaway layer at the start is the right call.
Bring your ID and confirmation email. Both are required at check-in.
Bring your family. Between the Kids Loop, the wristband, and the rescue dogs, this works better as a group outing than as a solo race — which is unusual for a 5K and worth planning around.
Register before September 20. The price jumps $10 on race day, so booking ahead is a straightforward $10 saved.
