The Carlsbad Marathon Is January 17 — and the Cutoffs Are Real
A Boston-qualifying marathon along the coast in the middle of January — plus the two things that catch people out: the published turnaround times, and a packet-pickup fee you can only avoid at registration.
Overview
The Carlsbad Marathon is Sunday, January 17, 2027, and registration is open now — which makes this roughly the last sensible moment to decide, because a marathon in mid-January means your training block starts about now.
The organizers' pitch is "The BEST and most scenic winter race" with "miles and miles of breathtaking ocean views," and the half marathon has the hardware to back it: voted one of BibRave's Top 20 Half Marathons, and winner of its Beautiful On-Course Scenery award.
The marathon is a Boston qualifier. Both the marathon and half are run on USATF-certified and sanctioned courses, measured with an Alan Jones counter.
But here are the two things that actually catch people out, and neither is obvious from the registration page.
First: packet pickup on race morning is a paid add-on, and it's cheaper if you decide now. It's $20 if you add it during registration and $25 in cash if you turn up race morning without having done so. Most races hand you a bib at the start for nothing. This one doesn't. If you can't get to a hotel on Palomar Airport Road on a Friday or Saturday, budget for it at checkout — that's the only moment it's $20.
Second: the cutoffs are published, specific, and enforced by turning people around mid-course. They're listed in full below. This is not a race where you can walk the back half and sort it out later.
Race Weekend
- Friday, January 15 — Expo
- Saturday, January 16 — Expo, plus the Kids Marathon Mile at LEGOLAND California, 6:30–10 a.m.
- Sunday, January 17 — Race day
The Distances and Start Times
- Full Marathon, 26.2 miles — 6:15 a.m.
- 5K, 3.1 miles — 6:40 a.m.
- Half Marathon, 13.1 miles — 7:45 a.m., wave start, with waves roughly 2 to 3 minutes apart
- The Double Down Challenge — the 5K plus the half, run as one combined 16.2-mile challenge
- A virtual option is offered for all distances
Note the order. The marathon goes first, the 5K second, and the half last — so a 5K runner is done and eating breakfast before the half marathon has started.
The Cutoffs, In Full
Overall time limits:
- Marathon — 6 hours (13:44 per mile)
- Half Marathon — 4 hours (18:19 per mile)
- 5K — 1 hour (19:21 per mile)
The turnarounds, which are the part that surprises people:
- Marathon: you must reach mile 7.5 by 8:00 a.m. or you're turned around at Breakwater Road
- Marathon: you must reach mile 18 by 10:25 a.m. or you're turned around at Cannon Park
- Half Marathon: you must reach mile 4.5 by 9:30 a.m. or you're turned around at Cannon Park
- Anyone who hasn't reached Carlsbad Boulevard and Carlsbad Village Drive by 11:45 a.m. is redirected to the finish by sidewalk, treated as a pedestrian, on a marked but unsupported route
The humane part, and it's worth saying: if you're turned around, you still cross the finish line and you still get the medal. Course support stays in place based on the 6-hour, 4-hour and 1-hour finishing paces.
If you're a first-time marathoner, do the arithmetic on that 8:00 a.m. checkpoint before you register. It's a 6:15 start and 7.5 miles — about a 14-minute mile. That's comfortable if you've trained and tight if you haven't.
The Expo and Packet Pickup
- Location: Holiday Inn Carlsbad/San Diego, 2725 Palomar Airport Road, Carlsbad, CA 92009
- Friday, January 15 — hours are listed two different ways on the race's own site, as 11 a.m.–4 p.m. in one place and noon–4 p.m. in another. Treat it as noon to be safe, or call ahead
- Saturday, January 16 — 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
- Packets are not mailed. Someone else can collect yours with a copy of your photo ID
- Race-morning pickup (only with the paid add-on) is at the Bib Pick Up Tent, northeast corner of the Finish Line Festival — opening 5:30 a.m. for the marathon, 6:00 a.m. for the 5K, 6:45 a.m. for the half
What You Get
For a road race, the inclusions list is unusually long:
- Finisher's medal
- Long-sleeve technical shirt
- Premium technical quarter-zip pullover — a second piece of real kit, which is rare
- Reusable grocery bag
- A one-day pass to the Carlsbad Columbia Sportswear Employee Store
- 14 weeks of the Toga training app, free
- A complimentary beer at the finish (21+ with ID)
- Gear check through Mobile Locker
- Finisher food bag and Finish Line Festival access
- Overall and age group awards
- It's the first event of the SoCal Triple Crown
Optional extras: gear lockers at $10 small, $15 medium, $20 large; deferral to next year for $50; race insurance billed separately.
Discounts and deferrals: active-duty military get 10% off, and military deferrals or refunds carry a $15 administration fee.
The Finish
The Shoppes at Carlsbad, 2525 El Camino Real — southwest corner of the parking lot.
The Finish Line Festival runs Sunday, 7 a.m.–1 p.m., with live music, refreshments and a beer garden for 21 and over with valid ID.
Dogs and pets of any kind are not allowed on the race course. Service animals only.
Good to Know
- Register before you shop the training plan. Entries are capped across all distances.
- Add race-morning packet pickup at checkout if you need it. $20 now versus $25 cash and a 5:30 a.m. queue.
- Work backwards from the 8:00 a.m. checkpoint, not from the 6-hour finish. The first cutoff is the one that ends most people's day.
- Mid-January in Carlsbad means a cold, dark start and a warm finish. A 6:15 a.m. gun and a 1 p.m. festival are two different climates — plan the gear check accordingly, and that's what the Mobile Locker is for.
- The 5K is a genuinely good option if you want the weekend without the commitment — it starts at 6:40 and you'll be at the festival before the half marathon field is through its first mile.
Why It's Worth It
A coastal marathon in the middle of January is a specific kind of gift. While most of the country is running on a treadmill, this one is a Boston qualifier along Carlsbad Boulevard with the Pacific on one side.
And the half marathon is the smarter race here for most people — an award-winning scenic course, the same medal-and-pullover haul, a 7:45 start that doesn't require a 4 a.m. alarm, and a four-hour limit that's generous enough to walk a chunk of.
