La Jolla's Creepy Candy Crawl Is Friday the 30th — Not Halloween Itself
Free candy, no registration, and a village full of merchants with balloons on the door. One catch: it's the Friday before Halloween, not Halloween.
Overview
Read this bit twice, because the event listing itself is confusing and it will cost people the whole afternoon.
The Creepy Candy Crawl is Friday, October 30 — the day before Halloween.
The La Jolla Village Merchants Association's own event listing invites you to bring your trick-or-treaters "to La Jolla Village on Halloween afternoon." Halloween 2026 is Saturday, October 31. The event is Friday the 30th, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Anyone who reads the sentence and turns up on Halloween proper will find it finished.
So: Friday. Not Saturday.
Here's how it actually works, and it's about as low-friction as a family event gets:
Pick up your candy bag at REBA — 908 Kline Street — then look for balloons. Participating merchants mark themselves with balloons, and you work your way through the village filling the bag. No registration, no ticket, no sign-up. In the organizers' words: "just show up and enjoy!"
It's free, and they promise "free candy, fun, and prizes."
What You Need to Know
- When: Friday, October 30, 2026 · 3–6 p.m.
- Where: La Jolla Village — start at REBA, 908 Kline St, La Jolla, CA 92037
- Cost: Free. No registration required
- First stop: collect your candy bag at REBA before you start
- How to find the stops: look for balloons outside participating businesses
- Organizer: La Jolla Village Merchants Association — (858) 230-2725
- Event listing: lajollabythesea.com
Good to Know
- Go to REBA first. The bag is the thing that makes the rest of it work, and 908 Kline Street is where it comes from.
- Three hours is generous for the village. Kline, Girard and Prospect are all walkable, so there's no need to rush at three o'clock.
- It's an afternoon event, so costumes get a daylight outing — useful if you have small children who won't last until dark on Saturday.
- This doesn't replace Halloween. It's the Friday warm-up, which means your Saturday evening is still free for the neighbourhood rounds.
- Parking in the village on a Friday afternoon is the usual problem. Go early, or park once on the edge and walk the whole thing.
Why It's Worth It
Trick-or-treating at businesses has become the safe, sanitised version of the real thing in a lot of places — but La Jolla Village is genuinely built for it. It's compact, it's walkable, the shops are at street level, and the whole route is a few blocks.
For a family with young kids, three hours of daylight, free candy and no registration is close to the ideal Halloween-weekend opener. And it costs nothing.
Friday. The 30th. Bag from REBA. Follow the balloons.
