The Races Are the Draw
Breed races are what most people come for, and they run in heats: French bulldogs, dachshunds, and corgis each get their own. If you have never watched twenty dachshunds decide simultaneously that the finish line is optional, that alone is worth the trip.
Costume contests run alongside the races. So does the Dogue Fashion Show, which is exactly as absurd as it sounds and draws a crowd accordingly.
The Water Stuff
Two separate things, and people mix them up:
- The 80-foot pool party — a long pool set up in the street with a DJ. Dogs swim, people watch, everyone gets splashed.
- The foam party — foam machines, a designated zone, dogs losing their minds in it.
Bring a towel. Bring two. If your dog is not a swimmer, the pool is still fun to stand near, but don't expect to stay dry.
Everything Else on the Street
The rest of the block fills in around those anchors:
- A haunted house for dogs — October, Ocean Beach, of course there is one
- Brunch with homemade dog food, so your dog eats while you do
- A pie-eating contest
- 360° and superhero photo booths
- A surf machine
- Dog blessing ceremonies

- Art installations and vendor booths running the length of the closed street
- A VIP area for anyone who wants seating and shade
Good to Know
Get there before 1 p.m. Four hours sounds like a lot until you're parked six blocks away. The event listing has drawn well over 5,000 interested, and Voltaire is not a wide street.
Parking is Ocean Beach parking. Which is to say: street only, competitive, and worse on a Sunday. Give yourself twenty minutes and be willing to walk from Sunset Cliffs Boulevard or the residential blocks north of Voltaire.
Water for your dog. There will be bowls out, but October in San Diego can still run warm and asphalt holds heat. Bring your own and check the pavement with your hand before you let your dog stand on it.
Bring cash. Vendors at street festivals don't all take cards, and the lines move faster with it.
Know your dog. This is loud, crowded, full of other dogs, and involves foam machines and a DJ. A reactive or anxious dog will not have a good time, and neither will you. If that's your dog, Dog Beach on a weekday morning is a better call.
Leashes on. Standard for a street event, and with this density it matters.
Make a Day of It
You're a few blocks from the water. Dog Beach — the original leash-free beach in the country, at the north end of Ocean Beach — is a five-minute drive or a fifteen-minute walk, and it's the natural bookend to the afternoon. Newport Avenue, OB's main drag, is two blocks south of Voltaire and has enough patios with outdoor seating that finding a spot to sit with a tired dog isn't hard.
Ocean Beach has a busy October generally: OB Oktoberfest takes over the pier area the weekend before. And if one dog festival isn't enough, Barktoberfest at Arrowood Golf Course in Oceanside is the North County version of the same idea.
Why It's Worth Going
Plenty of San Diego events tolerate dogs. This one is built around them, on a closed street, for free, in the best month of the year to be outside here. It also raises money for Just Love Animals Society, which makes the afternoon add up to more than a good time.
