EscoGelato Has Made 124 Flavors and Puts Out 18 a Day — You Have to Go Look
The case holds fourteen to eighteen flavors and they change every day. The full roster runs past a hundred and twenty. There's no way to know what's in there but to go.
Overview
EscoGelato in downtown Escondido serves "14-18 gelato and sorbet flavors that change daily."
Their published roster of flavors they've made runs past a hundred and twenty.
Which means roughly one in eight of them is in the case on any given day, and you cannot find out which from home. Their own instruction is the honest one: "Click the 'Order Online' to see what we have in the case today!"
That's either the best or the worst thing about the place depending on your temperament. If you need to know what you're getting, this will frustrate you. If you like the idea of a case you have to go and read, it's the most interesting gelato counter in North County.
The tagline is just "We make our gelato fresh everyday!" and the heading over the flavor page is "Celebrating the agricultural heritage of Escondido" — which, unusually for a slogan, they actually back up. More on that below.
Here's the single most useful thing in this article.
A gelato cake is $30 for eight people. The large is $40 and feeds fifteen.
Forty dollars for a fifteen-person dessert, made with two flavors of your choosing on a cookie crust under Italian meringue. That's the cheapest way to be the person who brought dessert, and almost nobody in North County knows it's an option.
The Flavors
The case rotates daily out of a roster their own site groups into six categories. A sense of the range:
Creamy — Stracciatella · Cookie Butter · Fior di Latte · Sour Cream Brown Sugar · Horchata · Salted Caramel · Caramel Shortbread · Cereal Milk · Fruity Pebbles · Salted Honey Waffle Cone · Honeycomb Espresso · Espresso Toffee · London Fog · Honey Lavender · Tiramisu · Butter Beer · Whiskey Cream · Grape Nut
Fruity — Strawberry Ricotta · Sour Cream Strawberry · Blueberry Goat Cheese · Blueberry Buttermilk · Apricot Goat Cheese · Mascarpone Fig · Coconut Fig · Cardamom Orange · Bananas Foster · Banana Walnut · Mascarpone & Lemon Curd
Nutty — Olive Oil Rosemary Almond · Brown Butter Pecan · Almond Fig · Honey Almond · Salted Almond · Peanut Brittle · Hazelnut Cookie · German Chocolate
Chocolate — Spicy Mayan · Mexican · Double Chocolate Malt · Chocolate Stout · Peppermint Mocha · Chocolate Raspberry
Dairy free — a genuinely long list, including Limoncello, Strawberry Balsamic and Passion Fruit sorbets, plus vegan S'mores, Pina Colada, Almond Joy, Hazelnut Cookie and Mint
Seasonal reserve — Blood Orange Sorbet · Pumpkin Cheesecake · Fresh Ginger · Sweet Potato · Brown Sugar Candied Maple Bacon · Thin Mint · Samoa · Goats Milk Chocolate · Egg Nog · Cream Cheese Cranberry Pecan · Black Currant · Strawberry Wine Sorbet
Blueberry Goat Cheese, Olive Oil Rosemary Almond and Brown Sugar Candied Maple Bacon are not flavors a timid gelato shop writes down. That list is the argument for the place.
Note it's a roster, not a menu. Their own wording: it's "a running list of some of the flavors we've created and might be in the case." The dairy-free and sorbet selection is large enough that a vegan or dairy-free guest has real choices on most days — which is worth knowing in advance, even if the specific flavor is a surprise.
The Local Sourcing
This is the part that justifies the "agricultural heritage of Escondido" line, and they name every supplier:
- Zumbar Coffee, Sorrento Valley — espresso and drip
- Stehly Farms, Valley Center — avocados for the panini, lemons and blackberries for the gelato
- Be Wise Ranch, San Pasqual Valley — mixed greens and squash
- Flugee Egg Ranch, Escondido — eggs for the vanilla bean and espresso gelato
- Valdivia Farms, Carlsbad, and Kawano Farms, Vista — strawberries
- Keys Creek Lavender, Valley Center — lavender for the honey-lavender latte and the lavender gelato
- Bread & Cie, San Diego — rosemary and olive oil bread for the panini
Seven named local producers, each tied to a specific thing on the menu. That's not decoration, that's a supply chain, and it's the most credible thing on their website.
They say they love Escondido and want to help "build connections between our fellow neighbors." They also offer to help arrange fundraisers for local charities — email them if that's useful to you.
The Coffee
Not an afterthought. Zumbar beans, "ristretto espresso drinks made with perfectly textured milk," pour-over, cold brew, whole-leaf tea, and chai brewed in-house from whole-leaf tea rather than poured from a carton. The house syrups include a honey-lavender made with the Keys Creek lavender.

The Takeaway
Go without deciding what you want, read the case, and order a kilo for the drive home.
What makes EscoGelato worth the trip to Escondido isn't that it's good gelato — it's that someone has made more than a hundred and twenty flavors out of avocados from Valley Center, eggs from Escondido and strawberries from Vista, and then refuses to tell you which eighteen are in the case today. Go and look.
