Father Joe's Villages Thanksgiving 5K: 25 Years, 8,000 Runners, and Free Parking in Balboa Park

Overview

This is the big one. More than 8,300 people ran it last year, which makes it the largest of the three Thanksgiving morning races in the county and the only one that feels like a civic event rather than a neighborhood run.

2026 is the 25th annual, branded as the Run for Hope. It starts on the Cabrillo Bridge, loops up through Bankers Hill and Hillcrest, comes back down Park Boulevard past the Zoo, and finishes into a festival in Plaza de Panama with live music, a beverage garden and coffee trucks.

One correction worth making up front: this is a Balboa Park race, not a downtown one. It has been for years.

There's one distance — a 5K — with a single mass start. You pick a category, not a start time.

The Three Categories

Timed Runners — $62.48 (ages 6–12: $44.12). Chip timing, live results, age group awards.

Fun Runners — $57.08 (ages 6–12: $38.72). This is where walkers, strollers and dogs go. No timing.

Virtual At Home — $46.28 (ages 6–12: $38.72). Run it anywhere, any time.

Ages 5 and under — free. Registration stays open until 8:15 a.m. race morning.

Prices increase after November 15. The site doesn't publish what they increase to. Same-day registration is available from 6:15 a.m. at the Organ Pavilion, also at an unpublished price.

Teams: 15 or more members saves $5 each. Hit 25 by November 1 for custom pins, 50 for a team tent, or 75 by October 1 to get your logo on the official race shirt.

The Course

Father Joe's publishes a map rather than a written route, but the road closures tell you exactly where you're going: out over the Cabrillo Bridge, up Balboa Drive to Upas, along Sixth to Robinson, west through Hillcrest on Robinson and Vermont, up Pennsylvania to Richmond, back east on Upas to Park Boulevard, down past the Zoo, and in past Village Place to El Prado.

It's a real tour of the park's edge neighborhoods, and it's the reason road closures run from 6:00 a.m. to as late as 10:30.

Parking Is Free, and That's Not a Small Thing

Thanksgiving Day is a parking enforcement holiday in the City of San Diego, so all of Balboa Park is free that morning. Park in any Balboa Park lot or on side streets not affected by closures.

ADA parking is in the Organ Pavilion VIP lot — show your placard or plate.

No transit guidance is published, though Balboa Park is served by MTS bus routes.

There's no gear check or bag drop, so don't bring more than you want to carry.

What You Get

A commemorative race shirt, a keepsake finisher's medal, free race photos, and — for timed racers — chip timing, live results and age group awards.

The festival at Plaza de Panama is the part that distinguishes this race: live music and awards on the main stage, a kids' area with activities and character meets, a beverage garden, coffee trucks, a 360 photo booth and local vendors. It runs 7:45 to 10:00.

Where the Money Goes

Proceeds support Father Joe's Villages' Food Services Program — hot meals for people experiencing homelessness and food insecurity across San Diego. Father Joe's describes itself as the region's largest and most comprehensive homeless services provider, serving more than 12,000 people a year.

Last year the race raised roughly $530,000 against a $550,000 goal, with more than 8,300 participants. Fundraising beyond your entry is optional.

Good to Know

Bring the dog. This is the dog-friendly one of the three Thanksgiving races — Father Joe's even sells dog bandannas and biscuits. The Coronado Turkey Trot prohibits pets outright.

The course is wheelchair accessible.

Register before November 15 to avoid the increase.

Pick your race by geography. This one, Coronado, and the O'side Turkey Trot all go off Thanksgiving morning. Balboa Park is the biggest and the most festival-like; Coronado has the bay views; Oceanside has the beach and two 5K waves.
