GEM Coffee in Talmadge Charges $3.99 for Espresso and Organised Eight Neighborhood Clean-Ups
Espresso and americano both $3.99. Pour over and cold brew both $4.99. A neighborhood coffee shop on Euclid that has handed out free drinks to clean-up volunteers eight times.
Overview
GEM Coffee sits on Euclid Avenue in Talmadge, and it publishes its whole price list. Start with the two numbers that matter.
Espresso is $3.99. A pour over is $4.99.
In 2026, in San Diego, those are good prices for specialty coffee — and the pour over being a dollar cheaper than the latte is the giveaway that somebody there cares about the coffee itself rather than the syrup.
Their own description is modest: "GEM Coffee focuses on quality products and its craft in brewing. We are dedicated to the San Diego community in providing an exclusive coffee and tea experience."
And on what they're for: "whether you're stopping for your morning coffee, tea, specialty drink or an afternoon snack, we've got you covered!"
Here's the thing I'd actually want known about this place, and it has nothing to do with coffee.
They have organised at least eight community clean-ups in their neighborhood, and given free drinks to everyone who showed up.
Run with the District 9 team, meeting at the shop at 7 or 8 in the morning — and the offer got better over time. The early ones gave volunteers a complimentary drink. One threw in a goodie bag for the first twenty-five people. The later ones promised "complimentary drinks and snacks to all volunteers."
That's a small business repeatedly buying coffee for people who picked up litter on its street. It's the most likeable thing on their website and almost nobody will ever find it, because it's buried on an events page. (A note on timing below.)
The Full Price List
Espresso and brew:
- Espresso — $3.99 · Americano — $3.99
- Pour over — $4.99 · Cold brew — $4.99
- Cappuccino — $5.25 · Latte — $5.72
The flavoured lattes:
- Honey Latte — $6.20 · Lavender Latte — $6.20
- Mocha — $6.25 · Chai Latte — $6.25
- Vanilla Latte — $6.30
Everything else:
- Tea — $4.99 · Hot Chocolate — $4.46
- Alternative milk — $1.10
They note that pricing is subject to change without notice, which is fair enough.
Two things stand out. The honey and lavender lattes are the same price as the mocha, which means the interesting orders cost no more than the obvious one — get the lavender. And $1.10 for oat or almond milk is on the higher side, so factor it in.
The cheapest genuinely good order here is the $4.99 pour over. The most interesting is the $6.20 lavender latte.

The Takeaway
Walk in before noon, order a pour over and a lavender latte, and ask when the next clean-up is.
What makes GEM worth knowing isn't that Talmadge has a coffee shop — it's that this one charges $3.99 for espresso, puts its pour over below its latte, and has spent years buying drinks for neighbours who turned up at seven in the morning to clean Euclid Avenue. That's a good coffee shop by any definition that matters.
