Hob Nob Hill: 82 Years, Three Owners, and a Wizard of Oz Mural That Isn't a Gimmick
A secretary from Consolidated Aircraft with no restaurant experience opened a 14-stool lunch counter in 1944. Eighty-two years and three owners later, it's still there — and it changed hands again last year.
Overview
In May 1944, a secretary at Consolidated Aircraft opened a restaurant she had no business opening.
Dorothy Hoersch had never worked in a kitchen. She and her husband Harold started the Juniper Café — fourteen stools at a lunch counter, nothing more. Two years later they moved it up to the corner of First Avenue and Juniper, where it became the Melody Grill, then Dorothy's Oven, and finally Hob Nob Hill.
It has not moved since.
Eighty-two years and three owners later it's still on that corner, which in San Diego terms makes it something close to a public monument. Dorothy died in 1991. Harold sold in 1993 to Tania Warchol, who took it on with a promise to keep the place intact — and kept many of the original recipes unchanged for three decades. Along the way it picked up a feature on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and awards from the Southern California Restaurant Writers Association.
Here's the one thing to understand before you go, because it genuinely changes how you plan around it.
Hob Nob Hill changed hands again in early 2025. Tania Warchol retired, and the restaurant is now run by its third owners in 82 years — Doug and Lara Hamm, under the Black Swan Hospitality banner, the group behind Nolita Hall in Little Italy and the Cow by Bear pop-up.
That matters for a practical reason: they don't publish a menu. Not on their website — there's no menu page at all — and their online ordering is switched off. For a restaurant whose entire reputation rests on specific dishes people have been ordering since the Eisenhower administration, that's a real gap, and it means you should call before you build a trip around a particular plate. The number is (619) 239-8176.
Second practical thing: it's a breakfast-and-lunch house. The hours on their homepage are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., daily, all-day menu. If you've seen a 10 p.m. closing time anywhere, that's their own contact page contradicting their homepage — see the note at the bottom.
What to Order at Hob Nob Hill
This is the one section I can't fill in properly, and I'd rather tell you than guess.
Hob Nob Hill publishes no menu anywhere — not on their site, not through their ordering platform, which is currently offline. What's verifiable is that the restaurant runs a single all-day menu rather than splitting breakfast and lunch service, and that under the previous owner many of the original recipes were deliberately left unchanged for thirty years.
So the useful advice is about how to order rather than what:
- Ask what's still from the original recipes. That's the thread running through all three ownerships, and it's the reason to eat here rather than somewhere newer. Staff will know which dishes are the old ones.
- Ask about the day's specials. Old-school American restaurants of this vintage typically rotate them, and with no published menu there's no way to know in advance what's on.
- Ask what's changed since early 2025. New ownership is recent enough that the answer will be specific and recent, and it's the single most useful question you can ask at the counter right now.
- Go for breakfast. With an 8 a.m. open and a 3 p.m. close, the morning is clearly the main event, and an all-day menu means you can order breakfast at 2 p.m. if you'd rather.
If you're reading this and you've eaten there recently, we'd genuinely like to hear what's good.
How to Visit Hob Nob Hill

- Phone: (619) 239-8176
- Email: info@hobnobhill.com
- Hours: 8 a.m.–3 p.m. daily, with an all-day menu (see the note below — their site publishes two different sets of hours)
- Online ordering: currently switched off. Call for takeout.
- Gift cards are available through their website.
- The 2020 renovation added a mural inspired by The Wizard of Oz — a nod to founder Dorothy's Kansas roots, and to L. Frank Baum's own well-known San Diego connection. It's a better idea than it sounds, and it's the first thing you'll notice.
The Takeaway
Go on a weekday morning, sit down, and ask the person who takes your order which dishes go back the furthest.
What makes Hob Nob Hill worth writing about isn't that San Diego has an old diner. It's the shape of the thing: a woman with no restaurant experience opened fourteen stools on a corner in 1944, and that corner has had a restaurant on it ever since — through three owners, four names, and eighty-two years. Most cities lose places like this. San Diego still has this one, and it's two blocks from Balboa Park.
It's also, right now, a restaurant in transition. The third owners are barely a year in. That's an interesting moment to show up — early enough to see what they keep.
