The name is a little misleading in a neighborhood known for its bars: this is a Saturday afternoon event, it's free, and it's built for kids. From noon to 4 p.m. on October 10, North Park Mini Park turns into a pumpkin decorating station, a costume contest with prizes, and live entertainment.

The thing that makes it more than a one-off is what it's attached to. The party runs during the North Park Sustainable Market, the monthly market Viridian Productions hosts at the same park — so you're getting a market and a Halloween event in the same four hours. That's a better use of a Saturday than either would be alone, and it means there are vendors, food and things to browse while the kids are gluing things to a pumpkin.

Come in costume. That sounds obvious, but a noon start makes people hesitate — it's a daytime event and the instinct is to save the costume for the evening. The contest has prizes, and a four-hour window at a small neighborhood park means the odds are considerably better than at a big festival.

Four hours is also generous for an event this size. You don't need to be there at noon; drifting in mid-afternoon, letting the kids decorate a pumpkin, catching the contest, and browsing the market is a complete outing in about ninety minutes.

Good to Know

Come in costume, including the adults. It's a costume contest with prizes and a daytime crowd — the people who commit stand out.

Plan for North Park parking. The Mini Park sits on 29th Street off University, in one of the denser, more walkable parts of the city. Street parking exists but fills on a Saturday. If you're close enough to walk or bike, do that — and the neighborhood's coffee shops and restaurants are the natural before-or-after.

Bring cash for the market. Small vendors at neighborhood markets don't all take cards.

It's a mini park, not a fairground. Expect a compact neighborhood event rather than a large festival — which is exactly why it works with small children.
