Everything you need to know about the Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K — the two-day format, the scenic point-to-point course, race-day logistics, and how to make a beachside weekend of it.
Overview
Some races you run for the PR. This one you run for the vibe. The Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K takes over Pacific Beach for a two-day race weekend on Saturday and Sunday, October 3–4, 2026, with a scenic waterfront course, a finish line steps from the sand, and a beach-party atmosphere that's pure San Diego. Put on by San Diego Running Co., it's grown into one of the most fun races on the local calendar — flat, fast, ocean views the whole way, and a boardwalk finish where the medal comes with a drink ticket.
The 5K runs Saturday as part of Pacific Beachfest; the Half Marathon runs Sunday morning; and if you're feeling ambitious, the Surfside Double Shot Challenge lets you do both. Whether you're tackling 13.1 for the first time, easing back into running, or just want a beach 5K with friends, there's a start line here for you. Here's how the weekend works and how to make the most of it.

What Makes It Special
Most half marathons ask you to stare at asphalt for two hours. This one hands you the coastline instead. The Half Marathon is a point-to-point course that starts at Crown Point Park in Mission Bay and runs the waterfront — past SeaWorld, Hospitality Point, the West Mission Bay Drive bridge, and Mission Beach — before finishing on Thomas Ave where it meets the Pacific Beach Boardwalk. It's flat and fast (a legitimate PR course), fully on closed streets and sidewalks, and the finish is now on solid ground — no more sand slog at mile 13.
The 5K leans all the way into the beach theme. It runs Saturday as part of Pacific Beachfest and is famously about half sand, half boardwalk — roughly 1.75 miles on the sand and 1.35 on the boardwalk — starting and finishing right on the beach. It's less about splits and more about the experience: running with the ocean beside you and a festival waiting at the finish.
And then there's the party. Both days wrap into a beachside celebration with live music, local vendors, and that unmistakable PB energy — the kind of race that feels like a reward.
The Two-Day Format
Since expanding to a weekend, the event gives you a few ways to run it:
- Saturday — 5K ($59.99): Half sand, half boardwalk, start and finish on the beach, folded into Pacific Beachfest. Early wave at 7:30 AM, main wave at 9:00 AM.
- Saturday — Kids 1K ($29.99): A short beach dash at 10:15 AM so the whole family gets a medal.
- Sunday — Half Marathon ($144.99): The main event. A flat, scenic 13.1 from Crown Point Park to the PB Boardwalk finish, starting at 6:30 AM.
- Both — Surfside Double Shot Challenge ($189.99): Run the 5K Saturday and the Half Sunday and earn an exclusive Double Shot medal on top of your finisher medals.
What You Get
Every runner receives a Pacific Beach tank top, a custom finisher medal, chip timing, free race photos, and a complimentary drink ticket. Half marathoners also score a custom pair of SDRC sunnies. The drink ticket tears off your bib and is good for a Michelob ULTRA (regular, Seltzer, or Zero) at Pacific Beachfest's beer garden on Saturday or one of the PB partner bars on Sunday — PB Shore Club, Mavericks Beach Club, or 710 Beach Club. You'll need to be 21+ with ID to redeem.
Overall and age-group awards go to the top three in each gender across brackets from 13 & under through 80+, for both the Half and the 5K. Winners pick up awards at the San Diego Running Co. booth in the vendor village after the race.
Getting There & Race-Day Logistics
Parking in PB is tight on race mornings, and because the Half is point-to-point, your start and finish aren't the same place. Plan ahead:
- Half Marathon — shuttle (recommended): Park near the finish and catch a shuttle to the start from 801 Grand Ave, with pickups between 5:00 and 5:50 AM. The last shuttle leaves at 5:50 AM, so don't cut it close. Note there's no shuttle back to the start after you finish — you'll make your own way to your car, about two miles away.
- Half Marathon — rideshare/drop-off: Drop at 1700 Moorland Dr, accessed from the Ingraham St side (Crown Point Dr closes at 5:50 AM).
- Half Marathon — start-line parking: Limited lots at Crown Point Shores, with overflow at Ski Beach Park (a one-mile walk). Lots close at 6:00 AM to secure the route, so arrive early.
- 5K & Kids 1K: Start and finish at the beach near 700 Thomas Ave. It's street/neighborhood parking only — give yourself 15–30 minutes to park and walk.
- Road closures: Expect closures around Thomas Ave, Ocean Blvd, and the Mission Bay course from Friday through Sunday midday. If you live in PB, plan errands and beach trips around it.
Good to Know
- Half Marathon cut-off: You'll need to hold roughly a 15-minute-per-mile pace (3:15 total). Fall off and you may be moved up the course, but you'll still finish and get your medal.
- Pace teams: On Pace provides pacers for 16 finish times from 1:25 to 3:00 — find them at Friday packet pick-up or the start line.
- Aid stations: The Half has seven, with water throughout, electrolytes from mile 4 on, and energy gel around miles 6 and 10. The 5K has one with water and restrooms.
- Packet pick-up: Free at Road Runner Sports (5553 Copley Dr) on Friday, Oct 2, 11 AM–6 PM, plus additional windows on race mornings. Prefer to skip the trip? Mail My Packet is $17.50 (deadline Sept 15).
- Event-day registration: If it doesn't sell out, race-morning sign-up is available for the 5K ($74.99) and Kids 1K ($39.99). There's no event-day registration for the Half — lock that in ahead of time.
- Dogs & strollers: No dogs on the beach per city rules. The 5K isn't stroller-friendly (soft sand and a stair crossing); the Half is.
- Dress for coastal mornings: Early October in PB is warm, but the morning marine layer is real. A throwaway layer at the start is smart, and you'll want sun protection by mid-morning.
- It's part of the RUN PB Challenge: This is race #2 in San Diego Running Co.'s three-race PB series, alongside the Leprechaun Run and the Santa Run.
Whether you're running it or cheering from the boardwalk, this is Pacific Beach at its most alive. For more of what's happening around town, browse our full event calendar — and if all that coastline has you dreaming, start with our Pacific Beach neighborhood guide.
