The San Diego Spirits Festival Returns to a La Jolla Art Museum, September 11–12, 2027
Eighteen years in, and still held inside a contemporary art museum overlooking the Pacific. Here's what the 2027 festival is, when it runs, and the parking trap.
Overview
The San Diego Spirits Festival returns on September 11 and 12, 2027 — and the venue is the whole point.
It's held at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, at 700 Prospect Street in La Jolla. Not a convention centre, not a hotel ballroom, not a parking lot with tents — a contemporary art museum on the bluff above the Pacific.
That choice tells you what this event is going for. The organizers describe it as "a premier cocktail cultural event" and "an upscale, dynamic celebration," and they bill the whole thing as "Cocktails – Culinary and Culture." It's been ranked by Fodor's as one of the top cocktail festivals in America, and the festival's own line is that it's among the Top Five in the country.
2027 is its 18th year.
Here's the practical shape of it, and the first thing worth planning around.
It's a short festival. Saturday runs 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday runs 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Four hours each day — which, combined with unlimited cocktails from over 60 brands, is a schedule that rewards pacing and punishes ambition.
The Parking Trap
This is the detail that will catch people out, and it comes straight from the festival's own directions page.
Street parking in front of the museum and on nearby cross streets is free — for two hours, Monday through Saturday.
The Saturday session is four hours long.
So on Saturday, the free parking runs out halfway through the event. Plan for a paid lot, a rideshare, or a very attentive friend.
Sunday is different: free all-day parking. Which makes Sunday the easier of the two days, on top of starting earlier and being a touch more civilised.
What's Actually There
- Unlimited cocktails from over 60 brands (the 2026 figure; the 2027 count isn't published yet)
- Premium spirits, plus "ready-to-drink innovations such as seltzers and canned cocktails"
- Food from local La Jolla restaurants
- Live entertainment — past years have run flamenco guitar, samba, a belly dancer, DJs and jazz on the terrace
- A venue with capacity for over 2,000 attendees, in a working art museum
The festival's stated mission goes beyond the drinking: "to enhance the spirits industry through market launches, professional development, product innovation, and education." In practice that means a lot of what you taste is new to the market — this is where brands launch rather than where they sell what you already know.
The Bottle Competition
Separate from the festival, and worth knowing about if you're in the industry: the San Diego Spirits Festival International Bottle Competition.
- The 2027 competition is held August 21, 2027 — three weeks before the festival
- Entries open in early 2027
- Open to emerging craft distillers, American merchant bottlers and large distillers, across whiskey, bourbon, gin, brandy, vodka, rum, agave spirits and liqueurs
- Judged double-blind on a 100-point scale
- Medals go to brands exhibiting at the festival; other winners receive physical artwork and digital recognition

Good to Know
- Go Sunday if you're driving. Free all-day parking, an earlier start, and the same festival.
- Four hours and unlimited pours is a trap. Eat the La Jolla restaurant food — it's part of the ticket's value, not a side thing.
- This is a launch event. The interesting stuff is what you haven't heard of, not the brands you already drink.
- Make a day of the location. You're on Prospect Street — the Cove, the galleries and the village are all a short walk, and the museum itself is worth the look.
- It's a year out. Diary it and check for tickets in spring.
Why It's Worth It
Most spirits festivals are an exercise in standing in a hall holding a tiny glass. This one is in a contemporary art museum on a bluff over the Pacific, with food from the restaurants down the street, for four hours on a September afternoon.
That's a different kind of afternoon, and after eighteen years it's clearly a formula that works.
