Solana Beach Puts Santa on a Fire Engine and Drives Him Past Your House
You don't go to this one. It comes to you — Santa, a fire engine and a sheriff's escort, through the streets of Solana Beach on a Friday afternoon in December.
Overview
Solana Beach's Santa's Sleigh Ride rolls out of the fire station at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, December 11 — and the whole point is that you don't go to it.
It comes to you.
The city's own description: "Santa will be riding along with Fire, Sheriff and Marine Safety personnel." A sleigh procession that travels through the city, with the fire department, the sheriff's department and the lifeguards escorting it.
Residents are asked to come out and welcome him as he passes. Their one instruction: "stay on the sidewalk as Santa passes by."
That's a lovely, small, municipal thing to do with an afternoon — and for anyone with small children in Solana Beach it's considerably easier than driving somewhere, parking, and queueing.
Here's the one thing you'll need to look for, because it isn't on the city's page.
There's a map of estimated times showing when Santa will be near each area — and it isn't published yet.
The event page refers to it but doesn't carry it. So watch the city's site in early December, or call Parks and Recreation on (858) 720-2454 — because without it you're guessing which half-hour to be outside.
Solana Beach's Three December Events
The sleigh ride is one of three, and the other two are both tree lightings in different parts of town:
| | |
|---|---|
| Sunday, December 6 | Fletcher Cove Holiday Tree Lighting |
| Friday, December 11, 2:30 p.m. | Santa's Sleigh Ride — from the Solana Beach Fire Station, 500 Lomas Santa Fe Drive |
| Sunday, December 13 | Holiday Tree Lighting at La Colonia |
Two separate tree lightings a week apart, in two different neighbourhoods, is a genuinely nice piece of civic thinking — Fletcher Cove is the beach end and La Colonia is the inland community park. The city isn't making one neighbourhood drive to the other.
Times for both tree lightings aren't published on the calendar listing. Check the city's events page closer to the date.
And Before December
One more worth knowing about, because it's a cluster rather than a single event.
Saturday, November 14 is World Kindness Day in Solana Beach, and the city has stacked five things onto it:
- World Kindness Day itself
- A blood drive
- A donation drive
- A Fixit Clinic — bring broken things, get help repairing them
- A clothing swap
- Plus a City Hall Gallery opening reception, "Beneath the Palms"
A repair clinic and a clothing swap on the same day as a blood drive is a well-designed Saturday, and it's the kind of thing that gets no coverage at all.
Also on the calendar: a Veterans Day Ceremony on Wednesday, November 11 — the actual day.

Good to Know
- It's a Friday afternoon, starting at 2:30 — so school pickup timing, not an evening event.
- Find the route map first. It's referenced but not yet published. Call (858) 720-2454 if it hasn't appeared.
- Stay on the sidewalk. That's the city's own instruction, and with a fire engine involved it's a sensible one.
- There are two tree lightings, December 6 at Fletcher Cove and December 13 at La Colonia. Different ends of town.
- Times for the tree lightings aren't published yet — check nearer the date.
- November 14 is a whole cluster — blood drive, donation drive, repair clinic and clothing swap.
- Admission isn't published for any of these, and we'd confirm.
Why It's Worth It
Most holiday events require you to go somewhere, park, queue and spend money. This one requires you to stand on your own pavement at the right time.
A fire engine, a sheriff's escort, the lifeguards and Santa, coming down the street in a city small enough that they can cover the whole of it in an afternoon. That's what a town of thirteen thousand people can do that a city of a million can't.
Find the route map, work out your half-hour, and stand outside.
One note if you're planning the wider weekend: North Pole by the Sea in Del Mar is Sunday, December 6, the same day as the Fletcher Cove tree lighting and about ten minutes down the coast. Del Mar has real snow; Solana Beach has a tree at the cove. You could do both.
