Viejas Outlets Ice Skating Rink: Alpine’s Outdoor Holiday Sheet

William RouttOct 1, 20264 min.

Southern California’s largest outdoor ice rink at Viejas Outlets in Alpine, Nov. 1–Jan. 5, 3–10 p.m. 90-minute sessions from $20, rentals included.

East County puts in a real outdoor ice sheet every winter at Viejas Outlets in Alpine — billed as Southern California’s largest outdoor rink, bigger than the Rockefeller postcard. It is a mall-and-casino parking-lot rink with holiday lights, not a mountain lake. That’s the point: you can skate at dusk, then walk into outlet stores that are still open.

Overview

The rink sits on the Viejas Outlets / Viejas Casino & Resort campus at 5003 Willows Road, Alpine, CA 91901 (casino listings also use 5000 Willows — same complex off I-8). This season’s operational page is the casino listing; the Outlets site is the directory page Notion pointed at.

Current published window: every day November 1 through January 5, 3:00–10:00 p.m., weather permitting. Sessions are 90 minutes, and rental skates are included.

Hours and holiday exceptions

Standard: 3–10 p.m. daily in that window.

From the live Viejas rink page:

  • Thanksgiving Day: closed (their listing currently prints November 28; Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26 — confirm before you drive)
  • Christmas Eve: 3:00–8:00 p.m.
  • Christmas Day: 5:00–10:00 p.m.
  • January 5 (last day): 3:00–8:00 p.m.

If Santa Ana winds or rain show up, they can dump a session. Check the rink page the day you go.

What it costs

Official prices on viejas.com/skating-rink:

  • Adults and teens: $22
  • 12 and under: $20

That’s the 90-minute session with rentals. They do not publish a “bring your own skates” discount on that page.

Casino guest line: 619-445-5400. Outlet office (mall hours 11 a.m.–7 p.m.): 619-659-2070.

How to do it

This is an Alpine errand, not a downtown one — about 30–40 minutes east of Mission Valley in light traffic, longer on a Friday at 5. You are skating next to outlet stores (Nike, Coach, Gap, and the rest of the usual Viejas mix) and a casino campus with holiday lights and a seasonal water show. Non-skaters can shop; skaters get the ice from mid-afternoon into the evening, which is the useful part in San Diego because the ice holds better after the heat drops.

Bring a jacket. Alpine is colder than the coast in November, and a 10 p.m. session on an outdoor sheet is actually cold.

Don’t mix this up with Skating by the Sea at the Hotel del, or with Viejas Arena concerts in Mission Valley. Different Viejas, different ice.
