The WOW Festival Returns April 15–18, 2027 — and There's No Entry Fee

Four days of immersive, interactive art spread across a university campus, with no entry fee and no stage. Here's how the festival actually works — and when to go if you can only go once.

Overview

The next WOW Festival is April 15–18, 2027. Mark it now, because this is one of the stranger and better things San Diego does, and it only happens once a year.

La Jolla Playhouse describes it as "a four-day celebration of immersive, interactive and surprising art experiences from local, national and international artists," and sums the whole idea up in five words: "This is theatre — without walls."

Here's what that actually means in practice, because it's not a normal festival and the difference matters.

There is no theatre. The festival takes over locations across the UC San Diego campus in La Jolla — presented in partnership with the university — and the work is immersive, site-based and interactive. In 2026 that meant performances in an amphitheater, a lecture hall, a loft, a plaza, a lab, and the open ground between them, plus installations you simply walked into.

And the second thing, which is the part people get wrong: there's no entry fee. In the Playhouse's own words, "There is no entry fee. Many WOW Festival events are free to attend and a limited number require a ticket purchase."

So you don't buy a festival ticket. You turn up, and some individual pieces need booking.

How It Actually Works

Based on how the festival has been structured, the programme splits three ways — and knowing which is which is the whole art of planning a day here:

  • Just show up. The majority. Installations and outdoor performances you walk up to with no booking at all.
  • Free, but RSVP required. Free to attend, but capacity-limited, so you reserve a spot in advance.
  • Ticketed. A limited number of pieces — typically the indoor, seated, small-capacity ones.

The ticketed pieces are the ones that sell out, and they're also the ones you can't improvise your way into on the day. When the 2027 lineup drops, book those first and build the rest of your day around them.

No physical tickets are issued — you keep your email confirmation, and arrive at least 10 minutes early for anything with a reserved time.

If You Can Only Go Once, Go Saturday

The festival's days are not equal lengths, and this is the single most useful planning fact. In 2026 the schedule ran:

  • Thursday — 5:00 p.m. to 9:40 p.m.
  • Friday — 5:00 p.m. to 9:40 p.m.
  • Saturday — 11:00 a.m. to 9:40 p.m.
  • Sunday — 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Thursday and Friday are evenings only. Sunday finishes before dinner. Saturday is the only day with the whole programme running from late morning until nearly ten at night — close to eleven hours against Thursday's four and a half.

2027 hours haven't been published yet, but the shape of the festival has been consistent, and Saturday has reliably been the full day.

What You Need to Know

  • Dates: April 15–18, 2027
  • Where: locations across the UC San Diego campus, La Jolla
  • Entry: no entry fee. Individual ticketed events are booked separately
  • Patron Services: (858) 550-1010, Tuesday–Saturday, 12–6 p.m.
  • All ages. The Playhouse programmes for "audiences of all ages" and has published separate family-friendly and adult itineraries in past years
  • Only service animals are permitted on campus

Getting there — and the campus is the complication, not the distance:

  • The trolley is the easy answer. The Blue Line stops right next to the Epstein Family Amphitheater; the closest stop is UCSD Central Campus Station
  • Triton Transit campus shuttles are fare-free once you're on campus
  • Rideshare drop-off is the Gilman Parking Structure, 252 Russell Ln
  • Parking at Gilman has run $4.50/hour before 5 p.m. with a $36 daily maximum, and $2.25/hour after 5 p.m. and at weekends with a $9 maximum — so an evening visit is dramatically cheaper than a daytime one. (Those are 2026 rates and worth re-checking.)
  • Overflow structures: Hopkins (9800 Hopkins Dr) and South (9500 Gilman Dr), both about a 10-minute walk, and Theatre District (9135 S Scholars Drive), 15–20 minutes

On the ground:

  • Food and drink come from UC San Diego's own campus vendors, with more options in the Price Center
  • Alcohol has been limited to the Epstein Family Amphitheater and must be consumed there. No outside alcohol
  • Bring a hat, sunscreen, water and snacks. Low lawn chairs and blankets have been permitted

Accessibility

The Playhouse publishes more detail here than most festivals, and it's worth knowing before you go:

  • Venues are reachable on foot and wheelchair accessible
  • Elevators are inside the Price Center next to the Burger King, and outside next to the Triton Steps
  • A golf cart service runs between venues during festival hours — (619) 538-9996
  • ASL interpretation can be arranged for some events with at least one week's notice
  • Some pieces take place on uneven ground, and the Playhouse flags which ones
  • Several events are outdoors, which is worth knowing if sensory load is a consideration

Contact Patron Services at (858) 550-1010 for blind and low-vision accommodations or anything not covered.

Artists: Submissions Are Open

If you make work, this is the part that's actionable right now rather than in April. Submissions for the 2027 festival are open. The Playhouse programmes local, national and international artists, and WOW is one of the few major platforms in the region specifically looking for immersive and site-specific work rather than conventional staging.

Why It's Worth It

Most arts festivals ask you to sit down. This one asks you to walk around.

You end up encountering a brass band on a lawn, a phone booth playing something you weren't expecting, a piece of theatre in a lecture hall, and a choir of strangers — across a single evening, for no entry fee, in a part of La Jolla most San Diegans never actually set foot in.

And it's four days a year. The next one is April 15–18, 2027. Put it in the calendar now and look for the lineup in early spring — that's when the ticketed pieces go on sale and start disappearing.
