There may be no more fitting place in San Diego to celebrate Mexican heritage than Old Town, where the histories of Mexico and California come alive every day. Each September, Old Town San Diego State Historic Park marks Fiestas Patrias — the celebration of Mexican Independence Day — with a festive, family-friendly day of music, dancing, living history, and food. It takes place Wednesday, September 16, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and it's free.

Fiestas Patrias honors the start of Mexico's fight for independence, and Old Town brings it to life the way it does best: with traditional Folklórico dancers, live music, hands-on crafts, costumed living-history demonstrations, and plenty of great food. It's an all-ages celebration of culture, history, and community — and a wonderful way to take part in the season, right as National Hispanic Heritage Month gets underway.

• The Old Town Guac' Off — a fun guacamole competition hosted by the Boosters of Old Town San Diego and the Chamber of Commerce, where you can taste and help crown the best guac in Old Town (a small fee per tasting)
• Food and the flavors of Mexican culture throughout the park

A Little History

Fiestas Patrias are traditional celebrations of Mexican pride, independence, and culture. The most famous is El Diez y Seis de Septiembre — the "Grito de Dolores" — which dates to 1810, when Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla called for the fight to break free from Spanish rule in the town of Dolores, Guanajuato. Though Mexico officially won independence in 1821, September 16 is still honored as the original Independence Day, and the celebration coincides with National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15–October 15). It's a meaningful and joyful occasion — and Old Town is one of the best places in San Diego to experience it.
