For one weekend each January, the Padres' outfield becomes an arena. The San Diego Rodeo brings professional rodeo to Petco Park over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, and 2027 marks the fourth year at the ballpark — which remains the single strangest and best thing about it. Watching a bull ride from a stadium seat downtown, with the Western Metal building lit up behind you, is not an experience most cities can offer.
The 2027 edition runs January 15–17, with twelve competitors in each event chasing a purse of more than $500,000. Sunday carries the semi-finals and the championship round, so the competition builds across the weekend rather than repeating itself.

The Competition
Six events run across the weekend: bull riding, saddle bronc riding, bareback bronc riding, barrel racing, calf roping and steer wrestling. Twelve competitors contest each one.
The structure is worth understanding before you pick a night. Friday and Saturday build the field; Sunday holds the semi-finals and the championship round. If you want to see titles decided, Sunday afternoon is the performance to buy. If you want the bigger night-time atmosphere, take Friday or Saturday.
Each Day Is a Different Event
This is the part most listings miss — the three days are genuinely not interchangeable, because of what happens in Gallagher Square alongside the rodeo.
Friday is the party opener. BeerFest runs in Gallagher Square with $5 drinks, and a drone light show closes the night after the final event. That drone show is the reason to pick Friday.
Saturday keeps the $5 BeerFest drinks and adds a DJ and line dancing in Gallagher Square. The biggest crowd of the weekend, and the most social.
Sunday flips entirely. KidsFest takes over Gallagher Square with games, balloon artists and inflatables, and the rodeo itself runs the semi-finals and finals at 3 p.m. Family day and the best competition, in the same afternoon — which makes it the value pick if you're bringing children.
Live music plays nightly in Gallagher Square, but those concerts are ticketed separately from the rodeo.
Good to Know
No re-entry. Once you're in, you're in. Bring what you need in one trip.
Sunday starts earlier. A 3 p.m. performance with noon gates catches people out who've mentally filed this as a night event.
Take the Trolley. All three Trolley lines reach 12th & Imperial a block from the gates, and a January weekend at Petco with a rodeo crowd is not the night to hunt for parking downtown. Everything in our Padres gameday guide about getting to and around the ballpark applies here.
Petco Park is cashless, and the standard clear-bag policy applies — check the ballpark's current rules before you go.
Dress for a January evening. Downtown after dark in January is genuinely cold by San Diego standards, and you'll be sitting still in an open-air stadium for a couple of hours.
Buy the concert separately if you want the Gallagher Square music. It isn't included with a rodeo ticket.
