Supercross Builds a Dirt Track Inside Snapdragon Stadium for One Saturday in January

Bree PartingtonNov 4, 20266 min.

They truck in the dirt, build a track on the pitch, and race it for one night. Round 2 of the 2027 season, Saturday January 16 — and the FanFest starts seven hours before the main event.

Overview

Supercross returns to Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday, January 16, 2027 — Round 2 of the 2027 season.

They truck in thousands of tons of dirt, build a custom track on the stadium floor over several days, race it for one night, and take it away again.

That's the thing worth understanding before you go. This isn't a venue that hosts racing. It's a football pitch that becomes a racetrack for a weekend, and the scale of the build is half the spectacle.

San Diego is Round 2 of a seventeen-round season, which means it lands early — the championship is still wide open, nobody has a points cushion, and the riders are racing like it.

The Schedule

| | |

|---|---|

| 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. | FanFest |

| 3:30 p.m. | Opening Ceremonies |

| 4:00 p.m. | Main Event |

Note the gap. FanFest runs for six hours before racing starts, and it closes half an hour before the opening ceremonies. So the day splits cleanly into two halves and you can do either or both.

FanFest is the pit experience — getting close to the bikes, the teams and the riders. A FanFest ticket must be accompanied by an event ticket, so it's an add-on rather than a standalone.

One thing to flag: the stadium's own event page lists the start simply as "3:30 PM," while the series' official page splits it into opening ceremonies at 3:30 and the main event at 4:00. Use the series breakdown. It's more specific and it's from the people running the race.

And a gates time is genuinely not published. The official ticket page shows "Doors open at 12:00AM," which is plainly a data error on a page that also lists a 3:30 p.m. ceremony. If you're going to FanFest at 9 a.m. you'll be let in; beyond that, check closer to the date.

Who's Racing

The stadium names Jett and Hunter Lawrence, Haiden Deegan and Jo Shimoda.

The 2027 championship runs 450SX and 250SX classes. Which 250SX division races in San Diego — East or West — isn't published yet, and neither is whether this round is a Triple Crown format. Both are usually announced closer to the season.

FanFest is planned for every round of the 2027 season except Detroit.

Tickets

No price tiers are published on either the stadium's page or the series' official page.

That's normal for a stadium motorsport event on demand-based pricing — the price moves with demand, so there's no fixed figure to quote. What is published:

  • Tickets are on sale now. The presale and general on-sale both ran on Tuesday, October 6, 2026
  • "All-In Pricing: The price you see includes all fees — no surprises at checkout", per the series' own site
  • Klarna or PayPal instalments may be available depending on the venue
  • Suites: contact the stadium for pricing and availability
  • Group sales: 619-284-7972

Buy through the official link. Resale listings exist and run well above face value.

Who Needs a Ticket

Two different answers, so check before you buy for a toddler.

  • The series' official page says all fans age 2 and older need a ticket
  • Snapdragon's own A–Z Guide says children two and under are free on a ticket holder's lap and three and older need their own — while noting "some events have different policies"

The series rule is the event-specific one, so plan on a ticket from age 2.

No adults-only restriction applies. Worth knowing that nothing on either page addresses ear protection — this is a stadium full of two-stroke and four-stroke race engines, and for small children that's a real consideration. Bring ear defenders.

Getting There

Snapdragon Stadium, 2101 Stadium Way, San Diego, CA 92108.

The trolley is the easy answer, and for this event it's a genuinely good one:

  • MTS Green Line to Stadium Station, a short walk to the gates
  • Trolleys run about every 15 minutes or better before and after most events
  • Load at least $5 on a PRONTO card — that covers two one-way trips. A new card from a machine costs $2 extra. You can also tap a contactless card, phone or watch at the validators (not Amex)
  • Two children 12 and under ride free with a paying adult on Saturdays and Sundays — which applies to this event
  • Free Park & Ride lots on the Green Line: Old Town Transit Center (412 spaces, about 15 minutes), Morena/Linda Vista (199, ~13), Grossmont Transit Center (220, ~17), Amaya Drive (236, ~19), El Cajon Transit Center (469, ~23)

If you drive:

  • Parking prices aren't published yet. The stadium says rates vary by event and are usually announced when the event goes on sale. Pre-purchase through Ticketmaster; day-of drive-up may be limited and may cost more
  • Lots are cashless. Cards accepted at entrances
  • Lots: Green (north of the stadium, main accessible area, Gate 1 off Mission Village Drive), Yellow/Thrive Park (Gate 5, Friars Road at River Park Road), Purple (Gates 1–2, San Diego Mission Road), Orange (Gates 1–3, Rancho Mission Road — the only lot for oversize vehicles)
  • Your pass must match the lot's entry route
  • Overflow: SDSU structures P3 and P4 at $3 per hour via PayByPhone (codes 28503 and 28504). Trolley fare not included
  • No event parking at Fenton Marketplace, nearby shopping centres or residential streets

Rideshare and taxi drop-off is on Mission Village Drive just north of Jacaranda Street, inside Gate 1. Bike racks at the Northwest and Northeast gates and along the east side — bring your own lock. Bird and Lime scooters aren't allowed.

The Bag Policy — Check Before You Leave

Clear bag only, one per guest:

  • Clear plastic or vinyl up to 12" x 6" x 12", or
  • A one-gallon clear freezer bag, or
  • A purse or clutch up to 4.5" x 6.5"

Backpacks, coolers, briefcases, luggage and computer bags are prohibited. There are bag-check lockers sold outside the stadium on the east side. Exemptions apply for specific medical needs or caring for young children.

Accessibility

  • Seven passenger elevators, plus wheelchair lifts in sections C-125 and C-131
  • Free assistive listening devices at Guest Services behind sections 101, 114, 135 and 328
  • Four quiet/parent rooms near Section C223, LB234, Section 141 and Section 332 — Guest Services will unlock them
  • Family restrooms are gender-neutral and serve guests with disabilities
  • Accessible parking: paid ADA stalls, first come first served, mainly in the Green Lot. Requires a valid ADA placard plus a parking pass or payment at the entrance. A courtesy shuttle runs for selected events only

The quiet rooms are worth knowing about for this event specifically. Supercross is loud for several hours, and four bookable quiet spaces is better provision than most stadiums manage.

How to Go

  • When: Saturday, January 16, 2027. FanFest 9 a.m.–3 p.m., opening ceremonies 3:30 p.m., main event 4 p.m.
  • Where: Snapdragon Stadium, 2101 Stadium Way, San Diego, CA 92108
  • Tickets: on sale now, demand-based pricing, all fees included in the displayed price
  • Trolley: Green Line to Stadium Station. Two kids 12 and under ride free with a paying adult at weekends
  • Group sales: 619-284-7972

Good to Know

  • Round 2 of 17, so the championship is wide open.
  • FanFest needs an event ticket too — it's an add-on, not standalone.
  • FanFest closes at 3 p.m., half an hour before the ceremonies.
  • Take the trolley. Parking prices aren't published and the Green Line drops you at the gate.
  • Bring ear protection if you're bringing children. Nobody's page mentions it and they should.
  • Clear bags only. Check the dimensions before you leave the house.
  • Tickets from age 2 per the series' rule.
  • Lots are cashless.

Why It's Worth It

Because the track only exists for one day.

Everything you watch on that floor was trucked in, shaped, raced and removed inside about a week. The jumps, the rhythm sections, the whoops — all of it built on top of a football pitch and then gone. There is no permanent Supercross venue in San Diego and there never will be, which is what makes it an event rather than a fixture.

Round 2 is also the best round to pick if you're only going to one. By the midpoint of a season, the standings have usually sorted themselves out. In January, nobody has anything banked, everyone is still finding the bike, and the racing is correspondingly unguarded.

And the logistics are unusually easy for a stadium event. The Green Line puts you at the gate, two children ride free with you at weekends, and the whole thing is done by early evening.

If you want to make a day of it, FanFest at nine and racing at four is a long day with a six-hour gap in the middle — Mission Valley and Old Town are both a short trolley ride away.
